International Press Institute World Congress and 54th Assembly 21-24 May 2005

IPI is a global network of editors media executives and leading journalists, dedicated to the furtherance and safeguarding of press freedom, the promotion of free flow of news and information and the improvement of the practices of journalism. Its numerous members come from more than 115 countries worldwide.

The Congress started in 1950 when 34 editors from 15 different countries founded an organization devoted to the issues of free press and promoting high standards of the journalistic practices believing that free press can significantly contribute to the building of a better world.

Each year the Congress is accompanied by a series of conferences, this year their focus will be on the issues of governance and social policies in African countries as well as the mission the press has to fulfill, especially in Africa.
