LECTURE BY SŁAWEK MUTURI PRECEDES THE KENYAN FILM ON "AFRYKAMERA" FESTIVAL

Within the frames of the Afrykamera festival, held on 1st June 2011 at the Kinoteka cinema in Warsaw, a documentary entitled "Monica Wangu Wamwere - the Unbroken Spirit", directed by a Kenyan named Jane Murago-Munene was presented. The film is about the great love of a mother who is willing to face any adversities to liberate her sons from political imprisonment in the 1990s. Since one of her sons, Koigi wa Wamwere, is a well known Kenyan dissent, the mother's fortunes become inseparably connected to the fortunes of Kenya. In a country, colonized by the British until 1963, getting independence was not synonymous to getting freedom ...

Before the presentation of the film, a lecture was held by Mr. Sławek Muturi, the founder and member of the Kenyan-Polish Forum. He brought the viewers up-to-date with the historical context of events presented and fortunes of the main character. His comparison of Kenya to Poland - liberated from the Soviet domination, raised a heated discussion even after the presentation.
